What to bring on a field trip?

  • Water, Water, Water.
  • It’s very important to stay hydrated, especially in hot weather.
  • Something to pry rocks and fossils out of the ground.
(A long screwdriver, a claw or rock hammer, a pry bar, or something like that.)
  • Something to put your items in.
(These could be plastic bags, boxes, a bucket, pill bottles…)
  • Wear sturdy shoes.
There could be lots of unsteady, sharp terrain where you’re looking!
  • Safety Vest
Bring a high visibility orange or yellow safety vest (these are required for trips along cutouts and road stops).
  • Eye protection.
The dust (and rock chips) can really fly. Better safe than sorry.
  • Magnifying glass.
Getting a good look at something helps in identification.
  • Personal gear:
Hat (to shade from the sun), suntan lotion, bug repellent.
